IRENE 4

By Your Mighty Kerr

There was a small showing of players at the Hills courts this morning.  I guess everyone else was busy boarding up their windows and buying milk and bread to prepare for the impending Hurricane Irene.

Scholesy, Vath, DJ, Quick and Mighty waited for awhile then a sixth player finally showed up, Bad Jeff.  He had his young son with him and Scholesy immediately went to hide his car keys.  A 3 on 3 half-court game was started.  It was a closely contested battle when, during a drive to the basket, Quick "popped" his calf.  Quick then had to hobble home.  Jeff then also departed with his son, leaving the "IRENE 4"- Scholesy, Vath, DJ and Mighty.

A round robin series of 2 on 2 games then ensued, with players switching teams after every game.  Just as they were starting, the skies darkened, the winds picked up and it started raining.  They didn't deter the Irene 4.  They weren't going to let a little hurricane stop them.  They carried on in the face of howling wind and horizontal rain.  Scholesy was on his game and was the leading scorer of the tournament.  DJ hit his normal 2 balls even through the rain.  And Vath hustled and scrapped his way all day.  Mighty was not so mighty as he went 0-3 for the day.  The other players were each 2-1 and named co-daily champions.

Actually the weather was fine, except for being extremely humid.

Let's hope we have more than 4 for next week's 19th anniversary game.

EIGHT IS NOT ENOUGH

By Your HHI Founding Father, Mighty Kerr

Over the past few weeks, there has been a smorgasbord of players at HHI.  It seems a different group of players show up each week.  This week, on a beautiful morning for b-ball, we had a small showing of 8 players for action at Hills Hoops.  Some of the regular regulars didn't make it, like Swoop, Iron and Heck (in a related story as reported to the world last week on facebook by Your Athletic Supporter, Jack Strap: The HHI Founding Fathers are reviewing the footage & considering Suspending What the Heck for shoving Uncle Bails who then swan-dived on Da Hills court causing scrapes, scratches, etc. that he treated with a Keg of Neosporin).
But there were some past regulars who made an appearance today, FU Frank and Junior.  It was good to see them.

The Quicksters (Quick Mike, FU Frank, Junior and Mighty) took on the Marshmen (Marsh, Gary US Bonds, Fran, and Doctor Todd).  The Marshmen got off to an early 6-1 lead in game 1, but the Quicksters slowly fought their way back and eventually won game 1.  In Game 2, the Marshmen dominated most of the way to an easy vistory.  Game 3 was a close battle, but the Quicksters came through in the end.

Let's hope for a better turnout of players next week.  We haven't seen the Bobs for awhile (Hacker Bob and Ex-Smoker Bob).
