IRENE 4
By Your Mighty Kerr
There was a small showing of players at the Hills courts this morning. I guess everyone else was busy boarding up their windows and buying milk and bread to prepare for the impending Hurricane Irene.
Scholesy, Vath, DJ, Quick and Mighty waited for awhile then a sixth player finally showed up, Bad Jeff. He had his young son with him and Scholesy immediately went to hide his car keys. A 3 on 3 half-court game was started. It was a closely contested battle when, during a drive to the basket, Quick "popped" his calf. Quick then had to hobble home. Jeff then also departed with his son, leaving the "IRENE 4"- Scholesy, Vath, DJ and Mighty.
A round robin series of 2 on 2 games then ensued, with players switching teams after every game. Just as they were starting, the skies darkened, the winds picked up and it started raining. They didn't deter the Irene 4. They weren't going to let a little hurricane stop them. They carried on in the face of howling wind and horizontal rain. Scholesy was on his game and was the leading scorer of the tournament. DJ hit his normal 2 balls even through the rain. And Vath hustled and scrapped his way all day. Mighty was not so mighty as he went 0-3 for the day. The other players were each 2-1 and named co-daily champions.
Actually the weather was fine, except for being extremely humid.
Let's hope we have more than 4 for next week's 19th anniversary game.
